Adjuvant therapy for localized breast cancer: radiation therapy improves disease control in women over age 50 years, but not in women over age 70 years
Product Description
It is clear that lumpectomy followed by breast radiation therapy is equivalent to modified radical mastectomy as a treatment for primary breast cancer. However, given that the indications for adjuvant therapy are continuing to evolve and that such treatment may influence the local recurrence rate, several studies have addressed the question of whether the use of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy makes the use of radiation therapy unnecessary. Two studies reported recently reach the conclusion that the indication for breast radiation therapy differs in women who are 50-70 years of age and those who are older than 70 years.
