breast cancer journey
the long journey of cancer and chemo and radiation
My mom has cancer. Why can’t they just cut out the tumors?
Okay, back in March of this year (2008), my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She’s gone through chemotherapy and radiation and other stuff. She even had a metal rod put in her leg over her bone, because the caner made it weak and the doctors were afraid she’d break her leg.
Yes, my mom is still alive, so I am VERY thankful for that!!^_^
However, she still has tumors. In her back and chest area, and only there. She says the tumor(s) in her back is/are pressing against a nerve (maybe more than one nerve, though). But the cancer(s) NOT affecting the nerve(s), other than pressing against it/them.
But this is something I’m wondering about. Why can’t she just get the tumors cut out? I have asked this question to her doctor before, but he only ever says “No, no no.”
Well, why, why why? The most he said was, “The tumors would come back”. But that still makes no sense.
Why not just cut out the tumors (while being careful of the nerves in the area), burn the area of flesh around where the tumors were (as well as put in some medicine to prevent infection), then close the area back up and if necessary use synthetic skin to help the body heal itself better? This makes the most sense (to me, anyway). The tumors would be less likely to return if not only were they cut out, but an area larger and deeper than they were, was treated after their removal.
Right now her doctor has only given her pain pills (she’s currently not getting chemo – she was, and then later the chemo pills, but right now they’re focusing on reducing her pain), but pain pills don’t solve anything. They only cover the issue up and trick the body into thinking it’s not as miserable as it is.
Cut out the tumors and there will be pain from the procedure, but not from the tumors anymore. Get rid of the tumors and the cancer will most likely go away and stay away. A similar thing is done with cases of breast cancer, so why not on other parts of the body?
THIS MAKES NO SENSE!!! AM I MISSING SOMETHING??!!!!!!
Have you ever had radiation and if so,?
what kind of side effects did you have? I had raditaion for breast cancer on my left side and the skin burned completely off under my breast, plus after the treatment, I ended up in the hospital with pleurosy which they said was caused by the radiation I had just finished and to top it off, my hair stopped growing under ONE armpit (crazy huh?). This was quites a few years ago but I was curious what happened to others who went through this. I didn’t not have to have chemo (so the hair loss thing is not related to that).
