Brian McConnell: Celebrating Last Radiation Therapy Treatment at Mayo Clinic, Scottish Style

When Brian McConnell was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002, his doctor in Rockford, Ill., referred him to Mayo Clinic. After approximately two months of radiation therapy treatment for his recurrent prostate cancer, McConnell celebrated his last treatment January 14, 2010, by ringing the Mayo Clinic Desk R bell in the waiting area a long-lasting tradition among patients, their families and health care providers. He is accompanied by his radiation oncologist, Thomas Pisansky, MD, and physicians assistant, Monica Wellings. Yearning to add a little Scottish heritage to this celebration, McConnell provided an impromptu bag pipe concert for patients and staff nearby.

    Well done.

    Suggestions:

Brief input from the attending physicians, the nursing staff, lab et al.

By “brief” we mean perhaps 20% of the video so that prospective patient populations can assess for themselves what the experience of Mayo means for a patient with cancer.

We’ve worked in Rochester and Jacksonville (when it was initially being setup) as computer scientists “computational medicine” is in its infancy. Videos/more specific data will help all parties collaborate effectively.
